Freedom Town Context for Operators

Freedom was settled in 1794 by the Revolutionary War veteran Stephen Smith, who built the town's first framed house and sawmill in what is now South Freedom. The plantation was first named Smithton in Smith's honor, then changed to Beaver Hill Plantation, and finally incorporated on June 11, 1813 as Freedom during the War of 1812 — a name with explicit political significance. Freedom Academy, founded in 1836, served as the region's only secondary school for decades.

The town's 19th-century economy was anchored by grist, corn, lumber, dowel, and shingle mills, plus a large canning factory, a woolen mill, and a tannery. Freedom Village was a regional hub with three hotels — Freedom Lakewood, Hotel Maine, and the Bellows House — two blacksmith shops, a shoe shop, a dry goods and general store, and a Congregational Church. By the mid-20th century the mills, hotels, and Academy had all closed, and many historic buildings were lost.

For operators, Freedom is the smallest population in this directory at 711 residents (2020 Census) and one of the most rural. The 22-square-mile town sits in the geographic center of Waldo County, which has only one dispensary (Bayside Bud Shack in Northport) for its roughly 40,000 residents. The drive to Belfast or Northport is around 17 miles and runs through several other un-served towns — Knox, Montville, Palermo, and Belmont — that share Freedom's dispensary-desert status. Daytime population is barely a fraction of the residential count; a Freedom-area operator is most likely to succeed through delivery into this multi-town catchment, since a walk-in storefront would struggle to draw enough local foot traffic on its own.
