Under 28-B M.R.S. §1501, an adult may consume cannabis in a private residence, including its curtilage, or on private property that is not generally accessible to the public and where the owner explicitly permits consumption. The property’s published policy is only one part of the decision. Maine law permits adult-use consumption in a private residence, including its curtilage, or on private property that is not generally accessible to the public when the owner explicitly permits it. Do not consume cannabis in a vehicle on a public way, and do not assume a shared parking area, public-facing common area, beach, trailhead, or a “smoking allowed” label qualifies.

How this directory is maintained
MDG lists properties only when a direct property-published page makes a clear cannabis-permission statement. We do not treat search snippets, review sites, “smoking friendly” filters, or old media coverage as sufficient evidence. Property policies change; a listing is not a promise of permission. Does a private rental automatically permit cannabis?
No. Maine law requires explicit owner permission on private property that is not generally accessible by the public. A platform tag, a smoking policy, or a private address is not a substitute for the property owner’s current written policy.
Why are there only three stays in this first release?
MDG includes a stay only when the property itself publishes a current, clear statement about cannabis. That keeps this first release selective rather than turning search snippets or marketplace labels into claims about a property’s rules.
Can a visitor consume cannabis in a car, beach, or public campground?
No. Maine restricts adult-use cannabis consumption to a private residence or owner-permitted private property that is not generally accessible to the public. It also prohibits consumption by a driver or passenger in a vehicle on a public way.
